My Drag Race Season 4 Audition Photos

January 27, 2012

Hi all, in honor of the upcoming premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4, I thought I would share some of my (rejection) application photos. A friend of mine encouraged me to try out, and although I’m not a professional drag queen, I tried to come at it from a contemporary art point-of-view. I have so much respect for what really amazing polished Drag Queens do. It is such a process/performance of living on the line of complete vulnerability and projection of self-confidence. I would like to try a drag contest at some point this year…I keep making empty promises. While there are similarities between doing my drag and doing my performance video characters, they are very different, and are not necessarily intermingled. I don’t consider my artwork, whether I’m wearing a wig, a dress, or makeup to be drag, it is something beyond the cause of gender or female impersonation. Although there is a separation of the two, this application was very much in line with my art practice, as it focused on the performance of becoming…of trying to do something well, and embracing all of the insecurities and shortcomings. Anyway I’m very excited for Season 4! and I’m rooting for Sharon Needles all the way.

The best part of the whole application was the long long long night I spent with my two friends putting it all together. It was fantastic. That was the art piece. My friend Nicole did the awesome make-up and took the photos! and Diane did the camera work.  And I did the costumes. Eat it up my subjects.

Launching A Golden Gram: Your Singing Telegram Service

January 1, 2012

Hi Friends,
Happy New Year! On January 9th, 2012, My boyfriend Adam and I are launching A Golden Gram: Your Singing Telegram Service. Our New York-based company combines the intimate experience of Singing Telegrams of yesteryear with a classically-trained singer of today. While we don’t don Marilyn Wigs and Gorilla Suits (at least not outside the apartment), Adam will show up in bow-tie and pitch pipe in hand to deliver your message. We believe a simple song, a handmade card, and a well-dressed crooner are all you need to create your beautiful moment. Watch our new trailer to see what we’re all about.

For $100, your loved one receives:
a song from our special list (sung by Adam)
a handmade card (created by Matthew)
a spoken message (written by you)

If you like what you see join us on Facebook and Twitter to get discounts, behind-the-scenes photos, and possibly a drag-gram at some point (One of these days…)

Here is the second drawing of the proposal for “The Birth of Venus”. In this drawing, The Mystic has drawn the performer out of the egg into a long tube, revealing a fabric venus fly trap.  I will start making prototypes and test sculptures for this piece soon.

This is one of a few drawings I’m working on for a performance proposal in a park setting. The Mystic/Conductor brings an egg about to hatch the birth of venus. I will post the other drawings as they come to give a bigger sense of the performance.

Rasputin’s Dozen – proposal drawing

November 20, 2011

This is a proposal drawing for an installation and performance. I want to perform as a version of Rasputin who, through mysticism and movement, brings performers to life out of fabric/paper mache faberge eggs. I have a few upcoming ideas about similar performances involving my Rasputin character and life forms/performances coming from incubating large faberge eggs. These projects play with themes of magic, legend, religion, sexuality, and fetishism.

“You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” Performance / Video (Felt Curtain)

November 14, 2011

I just finished editing and performing this piece. I am so excited to complete this project as I feel it shows the direction my work is taking. The curtain took me 6 months to create, which is the longest I have ever spent on one piece. My friend Suzanne Stroebe studio assisted me early in the process and helped cut felt petals. My other friend Diane Dwyer helped with the filming and lighting. Boyfriend Adam Kee was the vocal coach. Thank you all for the help! Here are pictures of the final piece and the video!
