Ordeal by Water
2011
Pencil on paper
14″ x 11″

This piece references a method of persecution where the accused was submerged in water. If the accused sank, it meant they were innocent, since the belief was that demons or witches could float.  The drawing isn’t meant to be a historical illustration or even a reference to the ordeal literally. It is more about invoking the idea of having an inner magic that threatens people to the point of isolation and persecution.
