Matthew de Leon artist

I was born in New York, raised on Governor’s Island, and currently live in Brooklyn. I received my BFA from the University of Connecticut, and my MFA from Parsons the New School.

The misfit, the loner princess, the wannabe singer, and the actor are out to play. These characters are manifestations of hopeful wishing and desperate desires to be meaningful, to be wanted, to belong, and to be special. Their performances are the poignant, poetic moments of failure and the enduring resolve they have to continue. Through sculpture, performance, and video I conjure them into a world influenced by the narrative and visual structures of MTV music videos, Dutch paintings, and Disney movies. Like a prose poem, offbeat and off-rhyme, they live in the moments between tragic and funny, reality and fantasy, the lovely and the bittersweet.
